The trail begins at the back of the Tuolumne Meadows Group Campgrounds. It starts out simple enough, with an easy climb up to Elizabeth Lake. However, this easy climb can be a challenge if you are not acclimated.

The trail flattens out as we near Elizabeth Lake. The trail forks right to the lake, but we go straight and wind around the lake and climb to the pass which is towards the right of the picture. The path, which is no longer a trail, becomes quite steep with a very short flat section about half way up.

The pass may be difficult to cross until as late as July depending on winter snow levels. Be carefull walking over it because you could slip and fall in.

Once at the pass we have an amazing view of Tuolumney Meadows to the North and Echo Creek valley to the south.

It is an easy hike down into the valley (left) and once there it is mostly flat and green with a primitive trail to follow. Looking back you can see how easy the hike down from the pass really is. You also see how the snow tends to linger.

There is good camping inside Echo Creek Valley. Camping on the east side is nice because it's farther from the trail, but the west side will get more sun in the morning. Camping is also good at Nelson Lake, but you can not make a fire there because it is too high.

The Trail comes and goes as you head east towards Nelson Lake. There are a few small rocks to climb on your way there, but none of them make for much of an obstacle.

Nelson Lake is a very nice place. However, the mosquitos around here are legendary. They are all over Elizabeth Lake and the Echo Creek Valley. The best way to avoid them is to find someplace with a strong breeze to blow them away.
