The trail up Mount Whitney is never easy, but this is particularly the case in winter when it is covered in snow. The advantages include more solitude and no bugs. On the other hand, you have more severe weather, avalanches, and cold temperatures.



You must have the skill, experience, gear, and determination to climb California's tallest peak in such severe conditions. Fred Miranda had the right stuff on March 17-19, 1998. This is what he saw...

Directions:
From Highway 395 drive to Lone Pine. Turn west onto Whitney Portal Road near the Ranger Station.



You probably won't be able to drive very far up the mountain during the winter which means you will have to hike farther.

General Notes and Observations:
A wilderness Permit is required year round, but there are no quotas required during the winter.



Need I say that winter conditions on Mount Whitney can be severe?
